MUSEUM OF RESISTENCE, COPENHAGEN

(For Jan Fuchs)

For two hours
we look at photos
and mementoes,
the plaques of thanksgiving
from Jewish
organisations,
the maps of sabotage,
the random violence
and the free press
that was never silenced.

Then,
in one corner,
I am reading
of a homing pigeon
being awarded
its own medal of honour
for carrying
a vital message
across the sea
to Ipswich.

Show
not tell
is what the writers say.
Let the readers
find for themselves
all their hopes and fears.
If this be so
how can I here display
my sudden
rush of tears?
