AN IRISH VILLANELLE

He wished to kiss the precious Blarney Stone.
He came from far away to make it true.
He swore it would improve his poet’s gift.

He took what food he had, and with his horse
he rode both day and night to find the town.
He wished to kiss the precious Blarney Stone.

The method was to hold him by his feet
there at the highest point outside the tower.
He swore it would improve his poet’s gift.

Just as his lips were closest to the side far,
far below he saw the tops of trees.
He wished to kiss the precious Blarney Stone.

They tried to hold him firmly as he swung
but someone’s hands could not have been so sure.
He swore it would improve his poet’s gift.

Although he never made a verse again
what happened loosened every word he had.
He wished to kiss the precious Blarney Stone.
He swore it would improve his poet’s gift. 30/7/91
